Why
ADP payroll data covering millions of records, analyzed by Stanford's Digital Economy Lab, shows workers 22–25 in the most AI-exposed occupations shrinking at 3.8% per year as of April 2026 — while the least-exposed jobs for the same age group grow at 2% annually. Across all ages, the most-exposed occupations contracted just 0.2%: the org reshapes more than it shrinks.
Indeed's postings data shows the same shape from a different angle — 71% of the past year's growth in software-development postings came from senior roles, and 37% from jobs with AI in the title.
And in Emergence Capital's survey of 560+ B2B software companies, 36% cut SDR/BDR headcount in the past year — the highest reduction of any sales role — while only 19% grew.
Not all of it is AI: industry analyses note the SDR cuts concentrated where teams overbuilt in 2021–22, and Indeed notes exposed-occupation posting declines began before ChatGPT.
What crossing takes
Proof you can build the machine, not just work inside it: a working Clay table, an agent, an automated pipeline with real output.
